FAQ

What is Iris Dating?
iris is a dating app that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to personalize the user experience. Once initial training of the AI is completed, iris can match users based on the likelihood that they will find each other attractive. It can filter and sort incoming likes and comments to prioritize the ones most likely to lead to a meaningful connection.

Why iris?
iris can save you (a lot of) time in the long run. It’s the only app that connects members based on the likelihood of mutual attraction. And there is no catfishing on iris: all member photos are verified with a selfie.

How can I use Iris Dating?
Begin your experience by creating a profile like on any other dating app. Verify your profile pictures by taking a selfie of yourself with the app. You will then go through training (see below).

Why is my “About me” section being rejected?
We want our dating community to be authentic and honest but also friendly and respectful. Our Terms of Use reflect this ambition and outline some rules about what is not allowed in user profiles: a language that may be deemed offensive or defamatory, spam, and content that encourages illegal activities or promotes other businesses are not welcome in our app.
You can find a complete list of what is and isn’t allowed in our Terms of Use.
We use a lot of machinery to help us enforce these rules: it’s not uncommon for machines to cause false alarms and trick us into rejecting content that should be allowed. If you think we have rejected something in error, please contact our Support team: we’re happy to help,

Why am I not receiving any suggestions?
Personalized suggestions from iris depend on training quality, your location, and the number of people registered nearby. iris is growing rapidly - check back in a little bit!

What is the difference between iris Lineup and Discover?
Both Lineup and Discover show you a curated feed of personalized recommendations. Using what it learned about you during training, iris lines up the members you are most likely to find attractive. Other factors (distance, Trust Rating, and last time online) are also considered, but they are secondary.

Our recommended users fall into two tiers.

Gold Group: the 2% of users you are most likely to find attractive.

Silver Group: another 15-20% of users you might still find attractive.

We show you members from the gold group in Lineup and members from the silver group in Discover.

The point is to help you swipe less: iris does the work, so you don’t have to. Thanks to iris’ Artificial Intelligence, our members like up to 75% of the users they see in their Lineup.

What are Preferences?

In the Lineup, you can control who you want to see first.

  • Sort by iris - Combination of attraction, distance, and activity

  • Sort by Distance - See members who are nearest to you first

  • Sort by Recently Active - See recently active members first

  • Sort by Trust Rating - See members with the highest Trust Rating first

When does the Higher Match Probability Label appear?
When iris predicts mutual attraction between two members, both see each other with this label on their profile.

Is Iris Dating free?
iris has a free version and a paid version. Free members can access up to 10 iris picks in their Lineup at a time, not including the grayed-out profiles. iris Pass members get access to the grayed-out profiles as well.

What is iris Pass?
iris Pass is the premium, paid version of iris. Pass members get access to the grayed-out profiles in Lineup and other perks.

Restore purchase
Restoring purchases prevents you from losing all the things that have been purchased on the old devices.

What is Attraction DNA?
#AttractionDNA is what iris calls the particular combination of facial features that you find attractive. It begins to understand your AttractionDNA during the training process and continues to refine it as you use the app.

What is photo verification?
iris welcomes all daters except catfish: it verifies every new member’s profile picture with a quick selfie taken through the app. Don’t worry about makeup or hair; your selfie will not be used in your profile.

What is the minimum age requirement?
You need to be at least 18 to use iris.

What are the photo requirements for iris?
Images for iris should be at least 480×640 pixels.

TRAINING IRIS

How do I train iris?
Once you create an account, you'll train iris by rating some stock photos. Watch this one-minute video to learn everything about training.

Why is training iris important?
Artificial Intelligence is not a magic trick. iris needs to learn what you like to make personal recommendations. Once trained, iris will begin to make suggestions based on the likelihood of mutual attractiveness. iris never stop learning: even after “training” is complete, it will continue to process your ratings and improve its recommendations.

What is a good training tip?
iris needs enough “High” ratings to move you onto the next phase. If you rush and give “High” ratings too generously, iris will not learn what you really like. If you are too picky, training may take longer. Try to find a balance!

Retrain iris
If you happen to go through the training just for the sake of passing it, then chances are your recommendation will come out mediocre at best. So if they don't sound too good, you should Retrain AI so that they might improve.

What is “Upload your type,” and how does it work?
We know the stock photos we show during training can’t encompass all the facial features our members may find attractive. That’s why we allow members to upload their type. If there’s someone you find particularly dazzling — a celebrity, a friend, an ex — you can upload a headshot of them, and iris will take their face into account when providing recommendations. You can access "Upload your type" in your profile section.

REFERRALS

How do referrals work?
You can invite friends to get an iris pass for free and other perks. Each referral counts towards your total once your friend finishes training. Make sure your friend enters your unique code in their profile section, so we know who invited them.

CONNECTING ON IRIS

How can I message someone?
iris members can message after they have liked each other ("matched"). After a match has occurred, a notification will alert you, and you will be able to start a conversation in your inbox.

With a tap on the Like or Maybe buttons, you can decide if you want to connect with that person. You can also tap on the heart icon when something interests you, whether it's a photo, bio, or any other part of their profile

HOW LOCATION FACTORS INTO IRIS'S ALGORITHM

iris always tries to match you with other members that are close by AND who have recently been online.

iris connected me with people who are far away. Why is that the case?
If you are connecting with a lot of members that are not close, this is usually for one of the following reasons:

  • iris has detected a high likelihood of mutual attraction: if it thinks you will like each other, iris might discount the importance of distance. We know this isn’t ideal for everyone: distance can be an insurmountable barrier for some, but mutual attraction is so rare that we don’t want our users to miss out on these opportunities.

  • You have “swiped” on hundreds (or thousands) of members already and are starting to run out of local options.

  • Most dating apps will show you local people, even if they haven’t been online in months or years. We do things differently: if we can’t find recently active members nearby, we show you recently active members who are further away. Inactive members will never like you back, so we find people you might actually connect with.

  • You are not located in one of our top markets. iris is a relatively new dating community, and we are not yet popular everywhere. We hope you will help us spread the word so we can grow in your area. We would love to pack your lineup with attractive locals.

TRUST RATING

What is Trust Rating?
Trust Rating is iris’s system for ensuring that ours is the most trusted digital dating community in the world. It is designed to reward honest and respectful communication and penalize - well… jerks.

How can I increase my Trust Rating?
Many factors impact how you are perceived by other iris community members.
Your Trust Rating increases when: you have six profile pics; you have a thoughtful, descriptive “about me” section (at least 200 characters long); you successfully refer other members to iris.
Your Trust Rating decreases when: you are reported by another user for inappropriate behavior; your pictures make excessive use of filters (such as Snapchat filters); your “about me” section is rejected by our moderation team for violating our terms.

What happens when I have a low trust rating?
We have designed Trust Rating to hold our members accountable to one another. If your rating drops below a certain threshold, you will be banned from iris. While we wish we didn’t have to act like a police officer, the reality of digital dating communities is that a few disrespectful users can negatively affect the experience of the majority who are nice.

What happens when I have a high trust rating?
Members with above-average trust ratings will get a badge displayed on their profiles to make them stand out. They may also receive discounts, be featured more prominently in search results, and even send some swag to thank you for being awesome.
